She made us understand that if we’re going to be doing any striking at all, we have to do it at an angle that will prevent us from ever being hurt.

You also have to learn how to defend yourself, and how to take care of yourself when you’re not fighting. In order to really protect yourself, you need to learn self-defense techniques. The instructor made sure to instruct those techniques to all of her students, no matter how old they were, because she wanted all of her students to be able to protect themselves.
One of my favorite things about this school is the atmosphere. A class is a class, but a friendly one at that. You’ll see other people of your age there, and some of them may even be your age, too! This morning, there were women and men, young and old, in this particular class, and they were all having a good time.
One of the coolest things about this particular school is the sparring that takes place in class. During your morning martial arts classes, you’ll learn self-defense techniques, but in addition to that, you’ll also learn to spar. If you’re not familiar with sparring, it is a technique in which two individuals engage in a mock fight, or in some cases a simulated fight, until one person is down. This can be done with just body parts, as in groin attacks, arm grabs, whatever. It really helps improve your hand and eye coordination, and teaches you how to protect yourself while you’re still learning to fight.
This particular school has a reputation of teaching effective martial arts. Their styles are very interesting and dynamic. There’s fusion between various types of fighting styles, such as western fighting methods, Chinese tai chi, and so on. In addition to all of that, they have instructors that are very knowledgeable about their subjects. That is why you will find a member of the class that will go out of her way to help each new student.
