There are many Zen meditation techniques. Begin Zen meditation with only a few moments and slowly increase your time as you become more attuned. Some practitioners begin their Zen practice by simply ringing a small Zen bell or allowing the sound to carry them to a very peaceful, clear state of mind.

Set a daily meditation time for successful mindful meditation. You will probably find that once you have reached a certain point in your daily Zen practice, you will not need to ring the bell or make any other preparations to go to a meditative state.

Zen Meditation Techniques

One of the best known among Zen meditation techniques is taken, which means “meditation of stillness”. It uses the Buddhist mantra, “Nirvana”. Mindfulness is one of the best approaches to reducing stress and tension. Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh discusses mindfulness in his classic book, The Practice of Charming Living. He says that true enlightenment cannot be achieved through intellectual knowledge or through “higher thoughts”.

Instead, true enlightenment comes from the interplay of body, heart and mind, and there are five Zen meditation techniques for bringing this into our everyday lives.

Buddhist Meditation Techniques

There are also several Buddhist meditation techniques developed by Buddhist monks during the Second World War who were granted sanctuary by the Japanese government. These techniques are called zazen, which means “meditation in stillness”. They allow practitioners to focus on the breath as they slowly observe the movement of the breath within the body. Most practitioners who use these Buddhist meditation techniques say that they provide them with greater insights and comfort.

However, it is recommended that you vary this position, depending on the experience that you have. Some people meditate facing forward while others sit facing down. It’s also advised that you meditate facing east if you are located in Japan or China and facing west if you are situated in the United States.


You may want to start your session off by practicing some walking meditation techniques. This can help you familiarize yourself with focusing and observing the breath. Start by taking several deep breaths, going as deeply as you are able to. Once you have exhaled all the air from your lungs, turn your attention to your left hand. Start breathing with your left hand, counting as you breathe in.

If you are new to Zen Buddhism, you may not know where to begin when it comes to the practice of Zen. It is recommended that you begin your meditation technique by sitting in the sun. When sitting in the sun, it is best that you wear sunglasses so as to block out the sun’s harmful rays.

Once you have become accustomed to the sunlight, you will be able to move around when sitting under it, but remember not to change your seating position. Many people find that sitting in the sun helps them to clear their mind and prepare for a good night’s sleep.

Zen Buddhism

If you want to know more about Zen Buddhism, one of the most important techniques that you can master is the technique known as the one-hand Buddhist method. You can use this technique just as you do a traditional sitting meditation, but instead focus your entire attention on your right hand. To start, simply take in as much air as you comfortably can through pursed lips, making sure to keep your back straight. After that, exhale as you slowly inhale through your nose. Repeat this a few times, breathing in and out through pursed lips. Make sure to keep your hands in a relaxed position, resting gently on the cushion of the couch or your bed.

Another very important aspect of Zen meditation is maintaining a proper sitting position while you are performing breathing exercises.

You should always sit in a comfortable position, not tilting your head up, nor should you arch your back or contract your muscles. Remember that proper posture is one of the main components of this type of meditation.
